Hi
When logging can Ztree skip on Access Denied Errors as it can do for file errors?
Couldn't find any prior reference in the Forum for this but it interrupts the logging
e.g.
Device: Disk drive C:
Error: Access Denied [5]
C:WindowsSystem32LogFilesWMIRtBac
kup*.*
Press: Cancel or Retry or Skip
e.g.
Logging Error Handling
T Auto timeout for logging errors 1s
U Default error dialog response Skip
In the same vein (uninterrupted logging) Also can Ztree provide an Setup option to always skip junctions as the default is No and I would like to set it to Yes (skip) once
Many Thanks
Ian Parr
PS No other tool comes close to Ztree for what it makes possible and I owe it tens of thousands of hours of my life in time saved on local and network file management over the last 20 years. Many Many Many Thanks :-) :-) :-) :-)
[Wish] When logging can Ztree auto skip on Access Denied Errors
/LQ?
Do you mean skip even the first occurrence of that error? The /LQ command-line option might do what you want, but I assume it will skip all kinds of errors. I've never tried it.
/LQ - Log Quietly. Use with CAUTION! Prevents all drive and branch
logging operations from displaying error messages for the entire
ZTreeWin session.

Are you trying to work out how to run Windows XP on a new computer? Maybe you could try running it in a virtual machine.
[Wish] When logging can Ztree auto skip on Access Denied Errors
Thanks Peter
I added it to the Shortcut and it works as described.
Assuming it only applied to Logging, that is perfect and I fail to see what risk it would entail, unlike file operations where ignoring an error could be a disaster.
If I wanted to find all the files and folders to which permission is denied, it would be easier to use a simple recursive script
It also appears to have dramatically sped up the logging time so that's a bonus but I will need to test that under it under under controlled conditions to confirm as
caching of the directory information can distort the results.
Thanks again
Ian
[Wish] When logging, can Ztree auto-skip Access Denied Errors?
Hello Ian,
some thoughts:
> unlike file operations where ignoring an error could be a disaster
Perhaps you can save your logged /LQ session via Alt-Z, Alt-Z, y
and restart ZTree without /LQ which reloads the tree (incl. unlogged dirs),
but now ZTree does not suppress errors when you do file operations.
> If I wanted to find all the files and folders to which permission is denied ...
For directories that are not logged, you could use the key combo Shift-PgUp/PgDn.
Do you know it? In the Tree window it jumps to the next/prev unlogged dir.
The 'permission denied' should then be displayed in the SFW (if CO-3P "Bypasses Small File Window" is =No).
But be aware of ZNOLOG.INI - the dirs/branches specified in it are excluded from logging via *.
To skip the ZNOLOG.INI influence, you may use Alt-Log [U]nlogged branches. See ZNOLOG.INI.

must run old stuffs with the current CPU speed
>Are you trying to work out how to run Windows XP on a new computer?
I can only say about my experience on this.
I have a junk modern DELL pc with the video card built on the motherboard that is not supposed to install XP. the built-in video card is ovbiously bad, i replaced it. And i installed the XP and XP ran very good in there, except i didnt bother to try sound drivers. so far all was an experiment, because i didn't want to use DELL. their saying about "XP doesnt run on a new PC " seems to be a lie.
I know the place that sells 10 year old used motherboard that runs XP and win10 (USB3, i5 max they said), i will try this soon. but still..
but i hate to reinstall softwares.
---------
>you could try running it in a virtual machine.
I have a several thoughts on this
firstly, i am looking for a different OS, even if this is so, a multi booting capability of a motherboard might as well make me install the wretched win10 again.
>virtual machine.
I am not a computer science person but my experience on virtual machine says "NO"
my definition of virtual machine
* it runs old stuffs with the current CPU speed
my thoughts on DOSbox (the virtual machine that i only know)
* it runs old stuffs with the 386 or 486 CPU speed. DOSbox is not a virtual machine if it kills the CPU, but its video rendering is run with the current cpu speed. this means it is good for the games, but worthless for the number crunching. and it was worthless in year 2000.
my thoughts and impression on the early version of XP around year 2002 or 2003 or 2004
* it only partitioned 138GB max, while win98's FDISK could partition 500GB and also make the extended partition without the "active" in it.
but MS never fixed the Fdisk's screen corruption due to the indentation and lacking of digits.
* you have to pay 8~10 dollars for the xp drivers to the hardware makers or software makers.
* a half of softwares didnt run.
so it took me another 4 years to take a 2nd look at the XP. this time, XP satisfied my OS perimeters, but barely.
must run old stuffs with the current CPU speed
That was a confusing series of sentences. :)
If you want an old machine that will run XP there are millions of them lying around the basements and garages of people like me, who rarely throw anything away.
Visit your local community college and talk to one of the IT teachers. Ask them if they have any old XP boxes laying around. You may be pleasantly surprised.
I've got half a dozen XP machine carcasses in my garage.
[Help!] Alt-F5 not doing anything
I used to use the ALT-F5 feature quite often and haven't changed my archiver.bb2 nor the compress utils for quite some time. I was trying to open a zip file (one that I have opened sever times before, but it wouldn't do anything....no errors or indications of any kind. I can still (V)iew the file and it shows all of the files contained in the zip, but I can't get Alt-F5 to do anything. I have even tried some really old RAR files that haven't been changed in many years. NO archive types are working.
I'm sure it's something simple, but it is escaping me. Any suggestions?

If all archive types are being blocked.
That is often caused by some other application using Alt-F5 as a global hotkey.

Yep, found it. A perfect example of RTFM. DOH! The video driver WAS grabbing it.
Thanks (for not REALLY telling me to RTFM) ;-)

So you're not fussy about which OS you end up with, so long as it runs your "old stuff"? What is this old stuff?

So you'd be happy if you could find another machine to run XP, but would prefer to move on to something else?

That lets you pick any RGB value for the standard 16 console colours, which I don't think the ZEP was about.
>Increasing number of colours on screen
To me says more than 16 simultaneous colours, which will require the Win10/ANSI console features.

From this:
"i am a physicist and do numerical analysis with the true basic complier with DOS 6.22.
etc
* true basic pro version and windows version are trash. slower and unstable, and have the bad editor(because the maker died).. meaning i am stuck with the DOS forever"
... I gather the problem is how to continue running the DOS version of True Basic?
What happens when you try to run True Basic for DOS with, say, Windows 10?
I read that it uses a lot of CPU because it constantly polls, but that shouldn't actually stop it.
I know other physicists who like to continue using old tools. If it ain't broke ...
Long Live Ztree!!!!
Huge, Massive THANK YOU to Kim for enriching ALL our lives with this truly amazing product.
I can't tell you how ecstatic I was when I first discovered Ztree. Xtree was really showing its limitations and I was seriously lamenting its demise. KIM rescued us all from despair when he created this amazing utility that has far exceeded the original in so many ways.
I'm SO grateful to him and to this community for keeping it going!
Let's keep it going 20 more years! ;-)

Hear! Hear! Hip-hip-Hooray for Kim and Ztree!!
I never could have survived managing the engineering documentation for one of the, if not the, top major refineries in America for as long as I did without ZTreeWin. And Kim's quick responses to our reasoned and rationed ZEPs have, of course, become legendary.
Alas, my retirement these last four years have lessened my file management needs significantly. But, I still couldn't handle the extensive collection of PCs at home, and kids' houses, without ZTreeWin.
Live long and prosper, Ztree and Kim!
must run old stuffs with the current CPU speed
>the problem is how to continue running the DOS version of True Basic?
This is no problem, every pc there was and and every pc there is now and every pc there will be always installs the DOS. the only problem is the sound card. DOS is stupid but it is a true OS in my book.
I have no problem runinng the DOS true basic compiler in any new pc's. But for the multi purpose DOS running pc which can support the sound for the DOS and XP, it took a very long time (over 10 years) to find the pen 3 CPU supporting motherboard with one ISA slot. i previously tried 3 other pen 3 supporting motherboards with one ISA slot that was supposed to run DOS and XP, they all failed badly because all motherboards came with the built-in sound card (turning it off possible in CMOS, but it was never turned off completely)
i dont think i need the multi-purpose DOS running pc anymore, i dont need sound for the DOS. DOSbox and scummvm are so good at running the DOS games under windows OS.
one thing about DOS though, about electrical engineers or some researchers.
they like to say how powerful and beautiful modern MATLAB is, it can do anything... on and on all day long.
i asked them then... how are you going to make the interface?
engineers said to me, you need the DOS and assembler language, because it is easier with DOS.
researchers said to me, you need the DOS and pascal, this is the only way i know, because pascal comes with the built in serial port control subroutine.
>I know other physicists who like to continue using old tools. If it ain't broke...
if i need to control some hardware someday, i will be needing the DOS supporting old motherboard with one or two ISA slots. so i will keep one multi purpose DOS supporting motherboard.
>What happens when you try to run True Basic for DOS with, say, Windows 10?
never tried. but i can run the windows version true basic, slower than running under DOS as True Basic company always said so, because CPU must run other peripheral things in windows. i can run the DOS version True basic in XP, it is not worth except for the demonstration purpose. even if it runs under win10 with a virtual BOX, it wont be worth like in XP.
>So you're not fussy about which OS you end up with, so long as it runs your "old stuff"?
maybe i am fussy in a different way. it doesnt have to run old stuffs like pc games. anything seems better than win10 in my eyes. i have 1 win10 pc and 1 win 8.1 pc. neither of them has any softwares installed. i just use win10 for the lectures in youtube, and used to use win 8.1 pc for an online game.
if ztree sale is slow in current windows OS situation, how slower will it be with the other OS situation.
i will ask about the OS that runs ztree in a virtual machine situation some other time.
[Wish] Combined path and filename for View, Filter and Search
I'd like to suggest adding a mode that combines the path and filenames as one string for most operations such as viewing, filtering, searching and tagging. Essentially it would be a combination of the data in the directory and file windows, with one file per line. This would allow filters that contained criteria in both the path and filename at the same time, for example "M:*InControl160611.csv". It would also be easier to see the path of each file when viewing a Global list. Sorting by path may be more intuitive as well.

Amen to that, Greg.
I, too, have been retired -- some 10 years longer than you. Yup, still at the keyboard. I think I got my license key shortly after 1996.
I wish you the best Kim for your tireless efforts. And to rest of ya'll (yes, I'm from South Arkansas) for your help as well.

F9 ztreemenu, console commands, zlist.zls can do.. i think
i think the path name is too long to show on the main window of any kinds of utilities, but there is a way to do this in ztree.
you can use 3 things. F9 ztreemenu, console commands like (if for do set type echo find ... etc) and zlist.zls
key commands are below
---------------------
REM #ZTSet FSPEC
SET ZLS=#ZTHomeZLIST.ZLS
SET ZTW=#ZThomeZTW.EXE /M /Y
FOR /F "TOKENS=*" %%%V IN ('DIR ^"%FSPEC%^" /A-D /S /B') DO (
ECHO T="%%%~fV">>%ZLS%
)
START %ZTW% "/K,CTRL_Z,RET,f,QUOTE,%FSPEC%,QUOTE,RET,HOME,SH_DOWN"
-----------------------------
this will look for a specified FSPEC... ( which is a piece of string from a file name), lets say "xyz" in every directory in c: then ztree will log only them, and then you use shift up and down to go to that directory directly and quickly.
in my opinion, ztree is not a simple file utility. ztree has an artificial intelligence. ztree can become as smart as a user.
i didnt invent this, many smart people here worked it out about 10 years ago.
